You could sand down the table and when doing so be carefull to keep your sander level. Use a square palm sander not an orbital sander. Visit Home Depot and purchase a sanding pad with handle in the joint compound and blue board area and then finish keeping your sanding board flat. Start with a heavier grit and finish with some very fine paper such as 400 grit.

This is helpful. Do you think an electric hand sander would be easier and as good as manual hand sander? I mean the one on which one puts a square of sandpaper and then the unit vibrates (not circular). Any other pearls to doing this right - for example is there any reason to strip the wood first?
