gouges in wood kitchen table

Kitchen table is finished narrow oak planks, looks like the wood floor, and was in very good shape. Unfortunately the grandkids did a little wood work project on top of it. Now there are lots and lots (and lots) of round gouges - about the size of finishing nail heads, all around the table. (This is from hammering wheel axles on wood models with one nail already sticking out on the other end).

Can I fill these somehow? Sand down the wood to the level of the bottom of the gouges and refinish? How do I begin to repair this? All thoughts appreciated. thank you!
Peter
