Help with refinishing chair seat

I would like to refinish the seats on four chairs like this and I need some help. How do I remove the backs? There are two screws on the bottom that seem to go into the back spindles, but when I remove them it doesn't even loosen the back. Is it possible to remove it? Or...can I refinish without removing it??? Any advice would be appreciated as I have never done this before :)
