The sofa that we're looking at has a seating height of 17". We found an ottoman that we love that's 18" tall. I've read that for comfort, ottomans should be the same height or a little lower than the sofa seating height. Should that extra 1" be a deal breaker?

For comfort? Will you be sitting on the ottoman, or just using it as a table/catchall? If the latter, comfort does not matter.

Will be propping feet up on the ottoman on a regular basis...

Usually ottomans are about 1" lower ot the same ht. As a table set away from the sofa it wouldn't matter. Touching the sofa it may look a little out of sorts.
