Checking of wood

I just bought a solid cherry table off a show room floor at a big of a discount as my husband was acquainted with the store owner. There were some minor scratches on the top which I expected but now I see a line or separation from the edge of the table in towards the center of the table that is about three to five inches or so.

It goes thru the entire table top. The store owner told me to keep an eye on it as it may be just a little checking. He said if it gets to six inches or widens apart...he could have someone repair it or order me a new table top. I have a year warranty on the table from the store...but I am wondering if it wouldn't be better just to press for a new table top. I am not liking looking at it and worrying about it.
