Piping

After doing a good bit on online research - here and on manufacturer's sites - I'm ready to start shopping for new living room furniture - a loveseat, upholstered chair and a wing chair. It seems that on all the ratty old furniture I've seen (mine included) the piping is the first to go - getting threadbare and popping out of the fabric. Is piping necessary? Are there upholstered loveseats and chairs without it? Are there ways of installing it that hold up better than others? How can I avoid the problems I've seen? (And why haven't I found similar posts, here?)
