Does anyone know what these gold knobs/plates are called? Or what style of furniture?

The reason I ask is because I was wondering if it would be possible to remove the handles and replace them with something more contemporary. The knobs themselves can be unscrewed, but the gold plate seems to be glued(?) or attached somehow.

I was hoping to be able to search around online to see if anyone had undertaken something like this.
