Wood Species

I live in a 110 year old simple Victorian four square. The floors throughout are maple. The trim is a warm, dark, stained pine with some grain showing.

We want to have some new family room and living room furniture (coffee tables, end tables, etc.) built. I doubt we want oak. What works? I do not want the wood species to clash. I also want some durability - we are not easy on stuff.

Similarly, we want to redo the kitchen. It is the only room with painted woodwork - trim, wainscotting and a built-in cabinet. Can we use stained cupboards when there is a painted built-in? If so, what species?
