Installing vinyl tiles over existing vinyl tile?

We have vinyl 12x12 tiles in our laundry room. They were glued down by the previous homeowner and none of them are coming up at the corners or seams. It is relatively smooth and even. We're planning on installing new vinyl tiles over this. We were told to rough up the old tile by sanding it with 100 grit sandpaper, so that the adhesive will stick better.

Is there anything else we need to do before laying down the new tile? Can we lay the tiles down in the exact same pattern as the current floor or would it be better to stagger them so that the old seams and new seams won't be exactly on top of each other?

Stagger them and find out when the previous owner bought the tiles. You want to be sure that you won't be sanding an ACM (asbestos containing material).

Id you are going over top of them....and the ones that are down now are maintenance free, the existing tiles should be skim coated with a Portland patch and installed over top!

You new installation will only ever be as good as what is there now. If you are willing to take that chance, then following the above advice should be sufficient. Additionally, if you do not have an voids to fill, instead of patching you can use a liquid primer to facillitate a good bond if the existing tile is asbestos. It its not asbestos, you want to scarify (rough up) the surface with a heavy grit sandpaper to facillitate bond. If there is any wax coating on the existing tile, that wax should be stripped before scarification, patching, priming, or installing new tile.

My folks but down the vinyl tiles in the 1970's. Does anyone know if they might have asbestos? Also, thanks for the above info. Very helpful.

Only way to be sure is to have a sample tested.

Asbestos wasn't really phased out of vinyl flooring until the 1980's, so it is likely the floor has it. Definitely get the product tested, as glennsfc advised.
