How to determine wood floor finish

Is there a test to determine if floors were finished with poly or with a water-based product? I need to do a recoat without sanding down to bare wood. Floors were previously done about 10 years ago by PO.

90 out of a hundred, the floors are poly. It comes water based as well as oil based.

As long as you are positive that the floors have a urethane finish regardless if its an oil base or water bourne you can add either to it without sanding down to bare wood. Just make sure the floors are clean and give it a good buff.

Sometimes a pro can tell the difference but theres no real test you could go out and buy from a store.

I would personally suggest a water bourne urethane.
It drys fast. Cures faster. Easier to deal with. Lower VOC. but thats just my opinion. Good luck.

Five years later here is an update: I gave the floors a light sanding and re-coated them With Poly and they came out just great.
