Installing engineered hardwood

I have been reading a lot of posts on here but am not finding exactly what I am looking for.

I will be installing shaw American restoration in most of upper level. Kitchen currently has sheet vinyl and living room has carpet. Can I leave the vinyl down and put an underlayment down to even it out where the carpet is?

I am thinking I will staple down to be able to use flush stair nose and transitions. Open to any opinions on that.

Also have a banister to butt up to in the living room. Split level railing by stairs. What's the best way to do this. Hoping to avoid overlap transitions if possible.
