Vinyl Plank: what should I get?

Hi, We are working on a farmhouse remodel on a budget. The majority of the house has original hardwood that we plan on refinishing, however, the kitchen and an addition on the house (dining room, family room, bathroom. Approx 600sq ft) needs all new flooring. We have 3 kids and two dogs so we have decided that vinyl plank is our best option for the high traffic / water exposed area.

We went to Lumber Liquidators today and looked at flooring. We picked some out from their Tranquility line that would end up being about $2.35 / sq.ft. (on sale). It is a click flooring. 5mm. 50 yr warranty.

I also have some samples from the past for Home Depots various allure lines that range from about $2.00-3.00 / sq.ft. I don't have a good grasp on their various lines and how they differ in quality, ease and warranty.

Any suggestions or info on what we should get. Any experience with these two brands? Thanks for any help! I can really use any advice I can get!

Stay the heck away from anything LL. It's horrible. Try the Mannington Adura. Or Starlock. Or anything at a real flooring store rather than a box store.

Your floor must be flat, smooth, and sealed under the vinyl. Be sure that you understand the different application methods of snap lock vs. glue down. They vary by manufacturer. Glue down will be more waterproof, if that's important to you, but takes a bit more skill. It's also usually cheaper.

A real flooring store with a flooring professional can guide you through the various plusses and minuses of any flooring that they sell.

We installed HD Allure in our basement a couple of years ago (installed ourselves) and it's been fine.

It held up well in the laundry room the first 2 times it flooded (washing machine woes) but after the third flood it's starting to come apart at the seams a bit.

The biggest downside was a plastic smell for about a week after we installed it- we kept the windows open for a while. But for the price, I'd totally do it again.
