 o
5/16' vs 3/4' strip flooring

I'm torn between 5/16" and 3/4" solid wood (oak) flooring for my living room and dining room. My home is about 12 years old. I am replacing carpeting in both rooms. There is ¾" plywood under the carpet. The rooms aren't used often, only during the holidays and extended family dinners, no pets, 2 people--1 is leaving for college soon. The main reason for my dilemma is the height difference between those rooms and the kitchen which is currently vinyl (but I do plan to replace that eventually just haven't decided with what yet but I'm thinking it’s between ceramic tile or ceramic laminate). I know the carpet is technically about a 1/2 inch higher but it’s a soft surface so it’s not as noticeable to me. I'm thinking 3/4" will look weird.

My reason was mainly cosmetic but are there any other things I should be considering between the two floors? Besides thickness is there any major difference between the two types?
