Thanks hollysprings i figured as much. Floor guy told me he can get close using Ciranova stuff. Will see what the samples look like.

"Rubio fumed" reacts with the tannin in oak to make a grey-black color in the wood. You can sand it lightly to remove some of the color, then put a pale finish over it.

Red oak has less tannin than white oak, but it would be worth testing the stuff on a sample to see what happens.

(They are not explaining the ingredients, but I assume it's using a ferric acetate solution like the popular steel wool and vinegar DIY ageing method)

Thanks lazygardens I saw that pic too. Interesting but too much going on for our space.

The only way I can think to achieve anything close to that color would require bleaching the Red Oak to remove some of the red tone, then applying a taupe/gray tinted pickle and clear coat. The soft grain would end up being darker than the hard grain, so, the opposite of this picture.
