It sounds like they used mastic. It's nasty, sticky stuff to remove - a lot of elbow grease.

Naturally you don't know if the original floor was repaired / water stained until you commit to remove the tile.

Rent a rotary hammer and chip away! Not rocket science, but it stirs up a lot of dust.

Don't know the answer on the adhesive. Definitely not thinset. Are you sure that's not caulk, or something gluing the threshold to the tile floor or something?

If you don't have room for another layer of tile over an old tile floor, youâÂÂll have to scrap off the old tile. It's a tough job, but the right tools will make it go faster.
