Select Hickory vs Red Birch

Posted by blueiris24 (My Page) on

We're installing hardwood floor throughout the entire first floor. We live in a dryer climate (the west). We have kids and animals. Our decor style is between earth-colored tone native american style -->contemporary. We're trying to decide between 3 1/4" red birch or 4" select hickory. Anyone with experience/photos/advice -- would love to hear it! TIA

We are trying to make these decisions too. The hickory is a much harder wood for animals and kids. Check the Janka hardness scale.

We know it's harder, but we have friends who have red birch with kids and animals and they said it's held up fine. Which way are you leaning? We currently have some red oak in our home which is similar in hardness to the birch. MY DH prefers the look of the birch, I like the look of the hickory. I wish I could see them both installed and then make up my mind!......

That's what I would like... model homes with different floors that I'm considering! We are leaning towards the hickory, but I asked a question hoping to get some pictures. It's such a big purchase, I want to be sure!

Are you planning on keeping them natural in color or staining them darker? IMHO, some of the select hickory floors I've seen that are stained tend to look more oak than hickory. They still look lovely, but they don't have the graining and character that's normally associated w/ hickory. I believe that the red birch has a smoother grain and stains quite well. I love my hickory floors and while they are hard, it's the finish that typically scratches, so the hardiness of the floor itself is less significant than you would think.

Good luck w/ your decision. I don't think you can go wrong w/ either.

We would keep the hickory a natural color. Red birch is significantly cheaper than the hickory, so my DH is leaning in that direction....

I googled red birch floor as I'd never heard of them. Lots of images. Glad you asked because they are really pretty. Sort of a shimmery thing going on there.

Does anyone have a reason to choose a mix of 3-4-5" mix of hickory over 4" hickory?
