Light engineered, durable suggestions PLEASE

I know what I want, I just don't know what it is.
I have been on this forum trying to educate myself for a while now. I am now 34 weeks pregnant and have to make a decision, and I think I have figured out what I want but am too EXHAUSTED by the blank looks on everyone at every floor store's faces. Please help me out and tell me if you have any suggestions for my taste.
Is Floorguy out there? :)
I need an engineered, light colored wood flooring. I am hoping for some natural color swirls to distract from the look of a single, scratchable surface. I love light bamboo but it is just too fragile for this family of dogs and kids. I also enjoyed the look of Lauzon's Red Oak that are posted on this site. Durability wise, I probably need a Braz Wal or Teak, but they are just too dark for my tastes, plus I learned from floorguy that the janka doesn't really factor in with engineered.
I also owuld like brand suggestions. I want a lower gloss, prefinished. I dont care how it is finished, I jsut want it to be tough and come ready to go. I am looking at BR-111 and a few others. The Lowe's people scared me to death with their lack of knowlege and help today. I went there today because it is close and they have samples. Did not go well.
The lowes guy told me I could get real bamboo wood floors and glue them down on concrete. what the.....?
also, he confused the living hell out of me about glue or floating and kept telling me conflicting things.
UGHHHHHHHHHHH.
HELPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately for the industry there are few of us out there who are doing more than just selling widgets; that is why you have a difficult time getting straight answers from the retail sector.

The suggestion of strand woven bamboo is a good one. Also, any engineered oak from an established brand would give you a floor that will 'hide wear' somewhat.

As for installation method...well that you're going to have to discuss with the knowledgeable and experienced person you choose to do the install after you've chosen the product you want. Some floors are designed to be adhered to the substrate, some are not and some can be installed either way.

My sister-in-law has a very light Mannington engineered wood floor that is floated. It has held up well and doesn't show scratches/dents. Sorry that I don't know the exact name.

to glue or not to glue..........

i love the idea about strand woven that can be glued down! wow! thanks.
here's a dumb question....what should i know in choosing between lock and fold or glue down? i can do either my installer says, the choice is up to me. can someone educate me about pros and cons?

RE: Light engineered, durable suggestions PLEASE

I think the only company that offers a Strand Woven Lock and Fold is Teragren. I have samples of this stuff and it is *very* impressive. It is also *very* expensive. This is meant for the DIY’er. If you are paying an installer – you might as well choose a less expensive product and either glue or float it.

Floating over concrete is often preferred because you can install a moisture barrier between the concrete floor and your wood – which is usually necessary. Some say they don’t like the "feel" of walking on a floating floor, but from what I have read, if you use a high quality underlayment such as "Floor Muffler", this should not be a problem.

I hope you get more responses as I am *not* a pro about this stuff. :-)

love this product. love the price. love that the customer service rep just spent over an hour on the phone answering questions , giving me an itemized quote, and sending samples. with delivery, supplies, glue, accessories...a little over 6 dollarsa sf.
unfortunately, this is the part i normally find out the bad part. tell me the bad part about cali bamboo please. just get it over with and break my heart!

I think Cali is well respected. If you are going with their Fossilized (their strand woven), I think you will be as happy as with any other wood choice out there - actually more than many because of how durable the strand is.

Did you decide on the install method?

glad to hear that about cali. i am just waiting for the bad news to come and us to find out something we don't like, like we have every single other "final" decision we have made in flooring! :)

not sure about install. it is a new build so we will have a fresh slab. cali rep suggested the tite glue they sell in that situation. i would think they would suggest the cork underlay that they sell but i don't fully understand the process yet. still dont know if floating or glueing is better. ugh.
