A kitchen will be far worse in wear on vinyl than a dining room will be. Low quality vinyl will burnish or tear from traffic and chair legs resting on it. Sheet vinyl is usually tougher and if you get the kind with a urethane wear layer you can experience many years before the symptoms of wear begin to show.
