Surcharges for special installs.

Hi,

We're looking at doing a cork floor in a checkerboard pattern, and it looks like it's coming to around $30/sf for the product and installation.

The job requires laying plywood, getting it all sured and flat, then gluing down the cork tiles.

We want the checkerboard, and have been told that is a surcharge (not sure how much), and that extra material needs to be bought (again not sure how much).

I can appreciate that a real install from a local pro is different from the $4.59/sf install pricing at Home Depot. However, even if the product is $15/sf for materials, isn't $15/sf high? I have no idea what realistic premiums are for the time commitment for patterns and associated materials costs can be. But I need to get smart. Any guidance is appreciated.

The prep is what takes the time and skill to get right. And you're probably not thinking of the material and time needd to do it in your calculations.

You're right, prep, the plywood below (and all the cuts and sanding and leveling) all takes time. But this is a 150sf job. Not a big job at all. $4500 because of all kinds of surcharges seems high to me.

I get it that there is prep. All I'm really asking is how much extra waste premium and time premium is there for checkerboard? We were told that's a driver for cost here. We were told that the plywood install was half a day or perhaps even just an evening, so it's not a big factor in the cost as it was explained to us.

More quotes is always a good idea. But remember youre not paying them hourly. So if it only takes them 1.5 hours to lay plywood its not anymore if it takes them 18 hours. Its a skilled labor job and youre paying for that.
