asbestos in floor tiles

My son just bought a house built in the 1940s that has tile in part of the basement, which they have been told could contain asbestos. Some of the tiles are broken. From what I've been reading, this could be a hazardous situation. The floor overall is ok,but there are several broken tiles. Do they need to find an expert and find out if it actually contains asbestos? Right now they are using that room for storage and not allowing their kids downstairs at all. Is it safe for my son and DIL to be walking around down there?? I've read that asbestos tiles can be sealed, but can you do that if some of them are broken? Thanks for any and all help!

Search these archives for lots of information regarding that evil white fiber. And, yes, it is safe for your son and DIL to walk around down there. If you're worried about it, just get them to buy an acrylic floor finish, such as Armstrong ShineKeeper and put a couple of coats on the tiles. Voila' ...no more worries!

The "Asbestos Scare" is overrated. As long as you're not grinding or sanding the floor, releasing clouds of dust into the air...it's not an issue. More relevant was the asbestos insulation used to wrap overhead pipes. Removing THAT turns into spongy clouds that can be harmful.

Even chipping up floor tiles in sizable pieces releases no dust.
