Tiling bathroom floor question

We have torn out the ceramic bathroom floor of 27 years. The floor underneath had a screen with mortar over the top then the 4x4 tiles. We are installing a 12x18 porcelain tile. The floors need some leveling. What type of leveling agent should we use? Would this go on top of the hardie backerboard or below it?

We need more info on what you have for subfloor like plywood, or slab ect.
