| Hi,
My living room is approx 400 sq ft, and is 2.25 inch red oak hard wood that is about 50 years old. At the entrance to the living there is an area approx 10 x 10 feet where the floor is badly damaged... it needs to be replaced... without question. I have 2 choices... 1) Replace the damaged area with new 2.25 red oak for $685 and then refinish the entire floor for $915. total...$1600 2) Replace the entire floor with new 3.25 inch red oak for a total of $3000.00 (includes finishing) If I go with option #1, the Contractor doesn't guarantee the new floor will be an exact match, but says it probably won't be noticeable. With the difference between the two options $1400.00 (and I know that is not small change), I'm considering going with the new floor... I wouldn't have to worry about the floor matching, and I'd have a brand new floor. If I go with option #1, I'm really concerned about how well the new floor will blend with the old... and I might be wasting $1600. Either option I choose, the floors will be stained Gunstock. I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions... especially on how good or bad I could expect the floor to match if I go with Option #1... Thanks Tom |

| I would get a custom installer to replace the small area but hand- select which red oak he will use... check grades and grains etc. The old-school oak may be far superior to what you could get today but with staining care for a small area I hope you could get a match... check that sucker plank by plank before it goes in and do a test stain beforehand to see if new wood can stain like old. Try on hidden piece of old wood too. |
