Electric Broom for Bare Floor

Posted by janegael (My Page) on

My floors are bare wood. I know...but I pulled up the rug and can't afford to have them refinished yet. Sweeping is kicking up too much dust. I have a pack of dogs who drag in a lot of sandy-dirt and I really need something to suck it up and get the floor clean without using a broom. I need an electric broom or small vacuum that will suck up the pattern off the wood, so it gets what's in the cracks as well.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

You don't want one with a battery that charges--those are not strong enough. You don't want one with a brush that rotates. I got the Bissell Versus based on Consumer Reports. I bought mine from amazon.com. You might want to read the reviews on amazon. It is true that the v-shape is not so great, it does lift off the floor, and the cord is a bit short (the major complaints on low reviews). It is also true that is has good suction and that you get used to (or learn how to work around) the other issues. I have had it for a couple of weeks and it does a good job cleaning and does not damage my new floors. For under $60 I feel like it was a very good purchase, and I would do it again. It does everything I want at a good price. Just my two cents.

Here is a link that might be useful: Bissell Versus on amazon

I don't have a recommendation but I can tell you NOT to get the Electrolux stick vac. We bought it (I think it was $99) and it worked great...for the first month. Then the suction slowly stopped working. I took the thing apart and cleaned out the filters/bought new filters but I still have to go over the same spots 3-4 times before everything gets picked up. I have gone back to using our big, heavy Dyson. We have 2 kids and cats so we have to vacuum the tile/hardwood twice a day.

I actually just bought a Bissell 3-in-1 for $20 at WalMart. So far, so good. It has a cord and is very light weight. It has a pretty good amount of suction for the fine sand, grit and dog hair. I'm stunned at the price but figure it was made for college kids. For that price it can quit and I can replace it with something better. If I'm lucky the Bissell brand will be true and it will have a good life here happily sucking up the stuff the dogs track in.
