How durable is the wiring in a heated tile floor?

I am getting a new tile floor in my kitchen in a few months. I am strongly considering heating it with radiant floor heating. I've seen the NuHeat product and I realize there are others, but I essentially have 2 questions:

1.) What is the history of problems associated with this type of heating regarding circuits or wires breaking? I cannot imagine digging up an entire floor to find out where the problem is.

2.) What type of radiant flooring is best? Just running cables or doing a mat system?

I appreciate your help on this.
