How to check wooden floors for flatness or evenness?

I'm thinking of putting a floating floor over my existing hardwood, and I was wondering how to measure for flatness or evenness.

I tried dragging a 4 foot level across the floor and did notice some small gaps and some wiggling if tried rocking the level from side to side. But how do I measure this tiny gap?

Get a longer straight edge and look for high spots and low spots. I mark birdbaths with a permanent marker. Low tech, but it works. Some new guys have laser equipment to measure this stuff.

String pulled absolutely tight can also reveal high spots and dips.

A floating floor over a wavy substrate is awful.
