Somerset Country collection vs Anderson

Does anyone have experience with the Sommerset solid wood contry collection- white oak? Costs? Satisfication?
We are considering hardwood for our kitchen. I was quoted a price installed $8.79 from our local carpet store. He called the rep and apparently Somerset is having a special... It does not include trim/reducers etc.. but for 5" hand scarped I think it is a good price...I was considering Lumber Liquidators but there is just to much bad press out there and they never called me back on a quote after the installer came to my house- which I thought was odd.. My other consideration is Anderson hardwood Cimarron collection in the Red Oak. If anyone has experience or feedback it would be greatly appreciated

Also any general installation costs.. it would be laid over an old linoluem floor with no furnitre to move.

I don't have any personal experience but my flooring installer has used Somerset and recommended it to me when I was looking for oak flooring. I think their prices are generally very good. Someone on this forum recommend TrueHardwoods.com and it seems like their prices among the best I have seen at least for the exotic flooring I was looking for.

Your quote sounds good but I would have them break the price down for materials and labor per square foot. Then you really can make a true comparison. Also make sure you get a bottom line price including any floor prep work. Unless you are buying quarter round from the flooring manufacturer it is generally not expensive.

Did you make a decision?

RE: Somerset Country collection vs Anderson

I got a price for Anderson $$$$ although beautiful... I am leaning toward the Somerset I'll just need to pick up some sample to lay in the house. I think that price he quoted was pretty good- only thing it did no include was the reducers/quarter round which I would opt for.. I'm guessing another $400-500 at most. Lumber Liq was coming in around $9.5 to install and I didn't like their floor as much as Somersets.

The quarter round should be priced per linear foot and like I said if he just buys oak quarter round and finishes it on site the cost should be pretty low. Post some photos when you find a few that you like.

Thanks for the reminder about the oak quarter round... we put all new baseboad and quarter round in our foyer after we re finished the floors.. we did all the staining ourselves since I like to do it..Do you think primed white base would look funny on this type of floor or should I stick with the all wood look - flooring and basebd and quarter round..
I noticed you are on the kitchen forum too... me too since i'm trying to start on this project.

I think the baseboard should match the wall. As far as the quarter round I will just tell you what my interior designer friend has always told me - the quarter round should match the floor not the wall. I think when it matches the wall it makes it look like the wall is creeping onto the floor. There are probably plenty of people that do it the other way but that way has always looked like the correct way to me.

It is funny how all of these little details add up. After all the trouble and expense you hate to mess up the finished product with a tiny mistake. I am always grateful to have someone to run it by.

I don't know what I would do without these forums. I have learned so much from all of the talented and generous people out here. I have been planning for a long time and I am really hoping to get this thing going soon.

Good luck and keep me posted.

Sounds like a very good price for solid wood. That's a nail down isn't it?
I bought laminate from LL for a rental last month and it came out good. I tried before that to set up a couple of appointments with LL to come to my house to measure for wood floors. But they always change the appt. Where I live the LL estimates are free.....that is probably why they cancel!

RE: Somerset Country collection vs Anderson

it is solid wood and it would be nailed..best price I can find on line (Truehards.com and Hosking) for the Somerset product is about $5.35-ish plus delivery charges and installation. Not sure what the going rate is for nail down install but I can't imagine it would anything less than $3.50 sq ft for a straight forward install right? So all things considered if I can get a really good deal locally- I'd rather go that route and give business to my local business owners. I think am going to pursue the quote as far as getting more details and samples in the house on Friday. Like I said, the store owner was saying Somerset was having certain promotions.
Interesting about LL- they charged me $25 for the quote.

I'm getting ready to order White Oak from the Garrison Collection II. It will be a glue down. That adds a lot to the cost of the installation. I'm buying online and having a local person install it. Wood comes to $3.61 per square foot including delivery. And I think the total install will come to $4.00 per square foot for a total of $7.61. That's the best I could do. Installers here, charge a lot.
LL usually charge $25 but for some reason, not in my area. I'm in Ventura County Ca.

just confirmed price for install will include a nail and glue down 5" planks...thoughts on combining the 3" and 5" planks. I just like the look in picture but wanted some other's opinions.

 o
RE: Somerset Country collection vs Anderson

hey skeetie - isn't it solid? Why glue? Just checking.

I have never seen mixed plank widths in person but I agree that in the photos it looks good.

Can you tell me what color you chose and how distressed it is? I can't tell on their website.

Looks like other manufacturers are having sales. I looked at Mohawk today but I think I like the Somerset color options better.

RE: Somerset Country collection vs Anderson

I have oak/buttercup in my house as a sample..it resembles a golden-ish oak floor but distressed. The distressing looks fairly authentic which we like because we have two Golden retrievers bouncing around the house. So I am hoping their scuff marks won't show as much, it will just blend in the the distress look. The store owner is suggesting glue and nail because anything over a 4" wide plank- he feel might lend itself to cup or split. I also heard this from the LL installer when he came to the house for measuring..

Back to color choices, I'm waiting on a sample piece of the oak in Royal Brown, strictly my preferences...Don't get me wrong Anderson flrs were beautiful but almost double $$. One other thing, the Somerset walnut is really nice but not on promotion- think he quoted me around $11.50 I wasn't that crazy about it for the money. I hoping the Royal Brown in oak works because at the $8.79 price installed I think is a good price. At least one thing will be done for this kitchen project.

As for Mohawk, I would never buy any products due to an issue my mother had with their carpeting. They played real hard ball with her and put a real bad taste in my mouth. And Mohawk did not stand behind their product JMO. I have Shaw/Stanton/Kane products - carpeting which we are very pleased with.

Our 5" distressed white oak that is 9/16 with 4MM wear layer is due to be delivered on Tues. Plan to start install on 8/31. It will be a glue down. I have Thomasville quarter rounds in the kitchen area that match the cabinets (cherry). Going with new baseboards (painted in the other rooms). I will buy and paint and installer will install. Will post pictures when done.

I must have blanked out the problems I had with Mohawk when we installed 3/4'' oak upstairs. Many pieces of the wood had insect damage that was obviously in the planks before it was finished. It was really annoying given the price we paid. Getting a response took forever and ultimately we just had to live with it.

Back to Somerset I go. I was thinking about the Royal Brown as well.

I have two kids and cannot decide if I want the distressed or not. We have some 3/4'' oak flooring in our kitchen that is not distressed and still does not show all of the abuse it has taken. I guess I need to see it in person.

msgreatdeals, I can't wait to see pics of your new floor since I know you have been looking for awhile also like me. You will love the wide plank flooring!

odiegirl3, thanks for letting us know that you too had problems with Mohawk. Skeetie219, that $8.79 sounds like a great price installed now that I see what all the material, labor and time all ends up costing.
