Pre finished engineered floors in new construction

We are building a custom home and have our heart set on prefinished floors. We need to have them installed absolutely last to avoid having them ruined by workers. Most GCs we spoke to think this is a tough order, to install everything first ( kitchen, doors, trim, etc) and floors last, and feel that the finished product may not quite look right.
Has anyone done this? Is it really such a bad idea to do pre-finished in new construction?

No its not unheard of. A few things that would need to be done if installed this way would be needing to cut door jams to get the floor to fit right. But thats a pretty normal thing anyways.

You would still need to install base and shoe after the install. So no matter what you would still have work done after the floor is installed.

Spending a few dollars more on floor protection like felt floor covering wont 100% eliminate all potential damage but will dramatically help.

We had 5" wide natural maple engineered installed on the entire first floor of our newly constructed home. The workers covered the floor with cardboard which protected it while more work was being done. Worked out great.
