Can we put tile on TOP of other tile?

We're wondering if this can be done - the house we are buying has massive amount of gloss white tile everywhere - from the entry through the kitchen. All one level - no steps. We would love to change it out and make it something more neutral/earth tone.

Tile removal is very expensive.... adding the cost of new flooring and installation as well - it gets cost prohibitive.

We are contemplating replacing all the flooring if possible - as you can see from the photo - there is a "circle" of carpet in the middle of this room cut into the tile. If we did tile on top of the old tile, I'm guessing we could put in sub flooring in the new carpeted area to match height before carpeting? We also want to get rid of the "circle" and make the carpet section rectangular.

Is this possible - or does the old tile have to come out first and go back to the slab foundation?
