Flooring under exercise equipment

Does anyone know what flooring choices are good to put under exercise equipment? We will be replacing old linoleum tile laid over concrete in the basement. We have a great deal of exercise equipment in the basement, including a machine with stacks of heavy, rectangular weights, a rack of weights in disc form and another rack full of barbells. I am thinking of rubber, vinyl or linoleum tiles. They will be placed in a large room that will include an exercise area and a TV area with woodburning stove furnished with a sofa and chair. In that "living" area, I would put an area rug over the floor tile.

Is this an installation suitable for DIY, or do I need a pro?

Thanks for your help.

Sams Club normally sells some interlocking rubber tiles that would be pretty ideal to use in this type of situation. very easy as a diy project and not very expensive.
