refinishing or topcoat on old hardwood floor

I have refinished several hardwood floors that were in really bad shape (sanding, down to the bare wood almost, polyurethene... etc.) But I'm doing one now with a nice patina... little to no damage...I am scrubbing the remains of the carpet padding, which is minor... and all it needs is a light coat of something. I'm sure it's a varnished floor (50+ years old) and was wondering if I could give it a light sanding, then a thin coat of satin poly.... What do you all think??
