sanding damage to new wood floors---help

Just remodeled, adding 4 rooms of new 3/4" wood flooring, unfinished, to existing wood kitchen and hallway floors. sand and refinish crew worked without their usual supervisor and after final finish coat we came in to see that they had created an amazing multi-color, unevenly sanded, diveted mess of the new and old floors. owner came to inspect and had only apologies, saying it would have to be redone. we moved out for another whole week while new floors were re-sanded and refinished, and while our remodel was put on hold. floors now look o.k. and we've received a bill for the original entire amount. We hope to stay in this home for many years, so how do we know how much of the life of our new and old floors went out the door in the multiple trash bags of sawdust during the second sand and finish? Any recommendations on how to handle this with the business owner as to payment? Thanks for your input!
