wood floor laid on uneven linoleum - how bad?

Hi all -

Grateful for "expert" opinions from this incredible forum!

Here's the current status on a floor project:
- oak hardwood laid on old linoleum which contractor said would act as a moisture barrier (this is on 1st floor above crawl space);
- paper vapor barrier was laid on top of linoleum
- when he reached the end part of the room, I noticed it was becoming uneven even as he reached there, he said he could not have levelled it as the sub floor was linoleum (catch-22?)
-pic below - door frame visible at left hand side in pic is 8/16"; and door frame visible at right hand side in pic is 14/16"

Would this be ok? what needs to be done? what is the worst that might happen if nothing is done?
