remove backing from vinyl flooring

I am removing the tile from my kitchen, and preparing to put down some new vinyl. The tile has been in place for more than 10 years, and the backing of the vinyl is sticking to the glue.

In the past I had started to use acetone, and was stopped fortunately from a friend.

Do you know of a short cut or a "safe" product to use to remove that residue?

We are not making a huge investment in new vinyl since we are going to do the entire house. Lowe's may help us, but I would like some information in advance of asking the.

I have already done our bathroom, but that was a replacement of carpeting. This is a problem I did not have in the bathroom.

I am looking at the peel and stick that are in sheets of 12" square or 18"square.

I need to remove the backing that is stuck with professional glue.

Have you tried a wallpaper steamer?

What's the subfloor? Wood or concrete?

It is plywood. I now believe that I want to use the vinyl planks that have adhesive on the edges. I have already taken up part of the tiles, and wonder if I could just lie the planks over what is left.

I would appreciate any advice you can give me. It looks like this will cost us about $500 - $600.

Sammy...I am a little confused here. You are saying that the vinyl tile had a backing?

Yes, the vinyl tile separated when I removed it. It was glued to the original tile, and the backing of it stuck to the glue. The original tile looked like plywood to me, but when the present tile was put down, it was over the original tile. I have been told to use wallpaper remover, and that makes sense.

We will simply use the peal and stick tile. The laminate planks that bend easily have been discontinued by our stores because the ends curl up. The good wood laminate would be 1200 for us to do. Peel and stick is 300, and I think will work well in a home that has 3 golden retrievers.
