prefinished wood- how tight a fit can i get between planks?

I had some prefinished maple for many years. Wedidnt install it so i dont know the brand or quality. It had beveled edges.....which i discovered allowed muck in between the pkanks that could only be cleaned out by scraping every single plank bevel with a butter knife. Gross. So then 2 years ago we put in new floors which were site finished oak. Beautiful and planks were as tight as could be, nothing is getting in between those babies even spilled milk. However i have fou d that the high traffic areas in the kitchen the finish isnt holding up well and largely worn down despite no shoes in the house ever. Plus scratches in the finish..... A lot of fine scratches really almost everywhere there is foot traffic.....again socks or bare foot only.

SO is there a wood product which will be tightly planked AND very durable and scratch resistant?
