Carpeting--need advice

I have not bought new carpeting in 15 years but now must do a large room. When I went to the store, everything had changed, including most of the brands. All my knowledge is out of date and I need help as this is not cheap. Hope you can help.

It is a family room that gets light use. But I don't plan to do this again so want very good quality. What are good brands? What fibers should I look for? I want something that doesn't show footprints. Is Berber still 'in'?

Anything you can tell me would help. Thanks!

Kane, Masland, and Fabrica are all good brands. Wool is always best, followed by a good nylon. You won't be in cheap carpet territory with any of that though. Berber, no. Plush never went away. It was always a classic, but it is back as a hot choice now. If you choose a frieze, don't choose the heavy "shag" looking ones. Those will be out in the next ten minutes. A light sculpted look in a pattern is always a classic as well.
