How do I prepare wood for vertical ceramic tile application?

Hello Experts,

I have a wood cabinet I am using for an kitchen island that I want to tile on a vertical surface.I had seen tile used
extensively in a french restaurant on a bar base and it looked great.
I don't know if I need to cover with durarock first or there is some kind of surface preparation I could use.
The cabinet has thee sides two are 18" x 34 and the back is 36" x 34". Tiles are 4x4 ceramic and I have 2x2 inch bullnose to finish the edges.
Please advise base preparation and type of thinset.

Wood and thinset don't generally "play well" together. 1/4" Durock attached would be best. You might put some PL Premium up on the wood and use some short screws to attach it.

Possible to sand down the surface and apply a primer like Zinser, but I prefer Durock. You'll want to use a modified thinset. HD has a lightly modified....Versabond which should work. If you opt for the primer, I would use Mapai's "Ultraflex II."
