Questions about refinishing flooring

We are currently having our living room and hall floors refinished. Our house was built in 1977 and the flooring was intalled at that time. It is Anderson, solid wood, and has "v" grooves between the boards. I don't know the name, but I'm pretty sure it is no longer made.

The contracter sanded and stained and is to put down three coats of poly.

My question regards how the floor should "feel" when finished. Right now, after one coat of poly, it feels 'coarse'. I realize it will change after the second and third coats are put down, but am not sure what to expect (we've never had floors refinished). Should I expect it to be smooth or are my expectations out of line?

The contractor should screen to cut down this grain raise before subsequent coats are applied; it is part of the job.

Thank you, glennsfc! I'm calling our contractor as they subbed the work out (to probably the cheapest guy) and I am almost positive they are just expecting to slap down three coats of poly and be done. Ugh...whatever happened to people being proud of the work they do (sorry, just venting).

Slow down. They don't sand until after the first coat dries and they're about to apply the 2nd coat. They may do just fine...give them a chance. :-)

weedyacres, point taken! This is day five of floor (re)finishing (multiple rooms, different woods) and I think the fumes have gotten to me...they did buff the floor and the finish is much better.
