Pre-finished or site-finished?

Our house needs about 1700 sf of hardwood flooring. Initially we were going to do wide plank (6" or more") downstairs, with narrower upstairs. So far we've been thinking of rift & quartered oak. We were told recently that the cost of 6" R&Q has gone up a lot, and that we might have to wait a while to find it. We live in north central NJ.

Now we're wondering about what pre-finished floors are out there that have a nice look. Any ideas?

I have lived in several 18th century houses with wide-plank pine or chestnut floors, and while I don't need that look for this house, my preference is for floors that look old. Right now the price for 6" select R&Q white oak, stained, with 2 coats of finish would be about $15/sf, so I'm interested in thinking about some alternatives.

Thanks much for weighing in.
