Carpet installation-do it yourself prep work

We are getting new carpet upstairs and want to remove the old carpet ourselves to save money.

Is it worth it to do this ourselves or is it better to pay the installers?

Should we let them move the furniture or move it ourselves? If we move it ourselves do we need to move it all out in advance or can we move it one area at a time as they work? If we have to move it all we would have to move it downstairs and we have some heavy stuff.

Pulling up carpet is easy. Just yank the corners out with a plier and start pulling. Cut the carpet from the underside using a box cutter into 4 foot wide runs to make it easy to carry, throw away and your good.

As for moving, it varies such as how much carpet, where and what not. Better off moving furniture ahead of time.

Check with the installers first. The last time we had carpet installed by a Lowes contractor, the Lowes installation price included removal of the old carpet & padding (which my DH was thrilled about).

Here's an even easier way to get rid of your carpet: post it on freecycle. Offer it free to anyone who pulls the carpet and pad out, and make them take both.

We did that with every last room in our house (yes, even the kitchen and bathroom were carpeted) with great success. And the recipients were thrilled to get free carpet.
