Hardibacker bathroom floor

Here's my scenario. I'm installing 1/4" ceramic tile in my bathroom. The existing floor is 1940's original hardwood in so so shape over a 2x6 subfloor with 2x6 joists 16" OC. My original plan was to thinset over the original hardwood, lay 1/4" hardibacker and then tile over that. This would leave me with a 1/2" transition into my hallway. It was recently suggested to me I could rip out the original hardwood, lay hardibacker over the subfloor (obviously with thinset underneath) and then tile leaving me with a 1/4" drop into the bathroom. I like the idea...question is is it worth the extra work? It is even a good idea?
