What to do with tack strips on hardwood floors

we have to bedrooms with nice hardwood floors covered by horrible carpet. I've pulled up the corner to check them out, and noticed a few things about the carpet install:

- Tack strips are attached with nails every three inches (yikes)
- Carpet pad is attached with staples along the outer edge every 6 inches

I assume if I remove them by pulling out the nails I'll have a bunch of holes all the way around the room (as well as staple holes) right? I don't want to have to refinish the floors so what would be the best way to do this? Can I wood putty the holes w/o refinishing? Can I shear off the nails somehow for a more "rustic" look?

Also as an aside if I was to want to just replace the carpet, do the installers typically remove old tack strip and replace it, or do they just use the old one? I'd hate to pull up the strip to someday decide we want carpet again and get new tack strips installed (with more holes in the floor).

Thanks for educating me!

I did this in my house but had the floors refinished so no problem. If you recarpet yes the tack strip is reused.

Did you pull up the tack strips yourself? Could you do it in a way that didn't damage the floor's finish? I'd like to do this but can't afford refinishing right now.

I did but yes it left small nail holes and also some discoloration where the strips had been attached.

Bummer, I hope we don't have any discoloration. I'm going to try the wonder bar/putty knife method and see how it looks. Thanks for the details!
