Patching tile into laminate flooring

Howdy!

I am mostly over in Kitchens these days as we are in the middle of a DIY facelift in our kitchen.

One of the things we are doing is moving our island appropriate distance from the stove, which means leaving a nice island-sized hole in the laminate.

I have read up on patching/replacing laminate, but I do not know where our flooring came from and am probably not keen enough to track it down and take the necessary steps to replace planks.

What we want to do is patch some tile into that space (appropriately enlarged, of course, to suit the space and allow for stool movement,) and create a tile "rug" there. I think it could be both cool to do and a practical solution, but what do I know?

A Google search on this turned up nothing.

I would like to know if I am inviting a heap o' trouble by attempting this, and if doable what materials I would need.

The laminate and underlayment is not that thick, so some sort of transition molding on the edges would be key, I would think, for starters.

What are the important considerations before we start this?

Thanks in advance!
