Impossible to clean. I mean really impossible to mop up a dropped egg or spilt milk. All of that will soak into the porous floor and turn rancid. It will raise the height of the floor by at least 4'' or more. That means some mean transitions to other rooms and a loss of ceiling height and completely redoing your basebords and door moldings.

I guess I am talking about real clay fired pavers (basically brick) that come in thinner tiles. I know you have to put sealer on brick, right? I wondered how real clay thin brick is installed, obviously you wouldn't be using tamped sand as you would for an outdoor area.

I've used Chicago Brick in a kitchen install. It's old, reclaimed brick cut into three slices. Looks great, but needs an enhanced, penetrating sealer...several coats, and even then, I imagine you'll need to be particularly dutiful in terms of cleaning up spills.

Thanks hollysprings and StoneTech! I guess I'm going to get tumbled travertine if I can find a good source that doesn't have bad reviews. The company where I found 3" by 6" rustic travertine has some bad reviews on GW.

And research and understand sealers really well. Travertine is POROUS. And soft. And will etch.
