Hardwood flooring - merging two floors?

Jimmods

We have a half wall diving our kitchen/eating area from our family room. We would like to remove this wall and put in floor to ceiling columns. The only problem that we foresee is that we have hardwood floors on either side of the existing wall. Removing the wall would yield a gap in our hardwood flooring. Our question...

Any suggestions on how we can easily merge the kitchen flooring with the family room flooring (already same stain and finish)?

Would it be possible to place a hardwood board (larger than the floor boards), over top of the gap so as to sort of "frame" the area, thus opening the space up by removing the wall, and providing a means of merging to two spaces' flooring? Any photographic examples?

Thank you!!!
