Staining unfinished Maple- problematic?

Hey everyone-
We are in the process of picking out an unfinished solid wood floor. My husband and I really love Maple and want to go with that. We've asked a few salespeople at various stores if Maple took to stain well and we're getting mixed answers. Our floor installer is saying its really difficult to stain Maple and we might want to reconsider our choice. Another sales person said you give it some sort of alcohol prep to open the wood up to staining and it should be fine. Can anyone enlighten me on this??

if its a norther maple the graining is pretty minimal and yes it can be harder to stain, but I don't think an experienced installer would back away from using maple. Its a very popular flooring option.

I had a disaster trying to stain my maple vanity. I ended up having to spray a color in the shellac to color it evenly. I would NOT recommend maple stained...period. It is very uneven and blotchy

A word from the Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association:

Here is a link that might be useful: It’s Bad Idea to Stain Hickory and Maple Floors

We have beautiful results staining hickory and maple but the learning process was very painful.

Why do you want to stain it? What are you trying to achieve? When you say "maple", what does that mean to you in terms of color?
