Straight browns and even ebony tend to have a greenish hue to them.

Which colors have you tried?
What brand of stain?

I've tried Minwax special walnut, provincial, chestnut #233, and early american. All seemed to have the same greenish tint but some were worse than others.

There are numerous 'stains' better than Minwax.

Hit a few paint stores.

Brickeye is right. Minwax is okay. But a lot of pros dont use it.
I personally use Duraseal. But there are others out there.

And although i dont personally use these some people on here like Dyes or gel stains. That might be another option.

I think that is being overly kind to Minwax stains.

Minwax works ok for smaller applications for your hobbyist woodworker. Not for floors.

Red is the opposite of green and will help to cancel it out. You need something with a slightly stronger reddish tone that what you've been trying. Yes, from a different company who uses better quality pigments in a better quality base.
