Chemicals in stain resistant carpet?

What exactly makes carpet stain resistant? For all you carpet experts out there---is it in the fibers or is it sprayed on after the carpet is manufactured or is the carpet dipped in it, etc....Just wondering as I don't want it to rub off on our skin or to breathe it in....

Have you looked at Smartstrand? It's stain properties come from the yarn itself and not something sprayed on. It's made from "a renewably sourced polymer made partly from corn". We have the Smartstrand and it truly does perform well stain-wise. Everything pretty much comes out with just plain old tap water and a soft clean cloth (including blood from when DS2 cut his foot and didn't realize it until he'd traipsed across the white carpet in his bedroom). The Smartstrand resists crushing even in high traffic areas and it is SOOOOOOOO soft! It does cost a little more than the other carpets out there, but as my carpet dealer said--unlike it's competitors, you'll replace it because you're ready for a color change before you have to replace it due to wear & tear.

Dipped during manufacture for the most part.

Some places treat the yarn.

Unless you have un-dyed wool carpet on jute backing, don't look up what the stuff is actually made of.

And watch out for the deadly hydrogen monoxide.

Very funny regarding deadly hydrogen monoxide. I am serious as I have small kids and I don't want them rolling around in stuff that is a carcinogen or worse. There have to be some carpets that are better than others as far as how chemical laden they are--I was looking for responses from people who have looked into that or were concerned.....

100% wool will be your best bet. Not stain resistant, but natural and high quality. And expensive. Very. Wood will be a lot cheaper, and then do a cotton or wool rug on top.

brickeyee--you are right, I'll write more later, but right now I'm going to go light up some smokes, roll up the windows and drive the kids around! No seatbelts or carseats either! Hey, it worked for previous generations! And does anyone know where I can buy some lead paint? I might paint my kids crib with it!
