Unfinished T&H install, slightly damaged pieces

I had a couple of pallets (1480 sq ft) of unfinished 3-1/4" rift and quarter sawn white oak delivered. There are some damaged board ends, from handling during shipment. I also spread out 3 of the 79 bundles, and there are a few pieces that I could discard for minor defects, or perhaps shorten a bit and use.

So, if you cut the end off of a piece, and don't plan to use it as a starter, can you just ignore the lack of an end tongue and groove? Or should you cut a new groove, or make some other accommodation?
