How did you cope with moving the furniture?

We need to replace our carpets - but the process of moving all the furniture to replace them is daunting. How did you handle that?

This would be over 2000 sq ft of carpet. The space includes quite a lot of bookshelves loaded with books and several 4 drawer file cabinets - there is just so much stuff that will have to move. (At least there are no stairs.) There also is an upright piano and this installer doesn't move pianos.

We made our first visit to a carpet store today and were told that their installers will move the large pieces of furniture as part of the installation but the furniture has to be empty (e.g. the bookshelves and cabinets would have to be emptied.

Should we do the carpet replacement in stages to make it easier? There are three separate carpeted areas - two halls with bedrooms and a living room/dining room area that are separated by the tile entry hall and hardware floor kitchen/family room so it would be easy to separate this into two or three separate jobs making it easier to have someplace to store the items from the rooms and not having to do it all at once.

Do people hire movers or some other kind of workers to handle boxing and moving the stuff the installer doesn't do?
