Need advice--can't find same width hardwood floor to match

Hi all~I am hoping for some advice on hardwood flooring. I moved into my home this summer. Currently, there is hardwood in the kitchen/dinning room; carpet in the living room. It is an open concept area. The existing hardwood is Shaw hardwood, 3 1/2" width (per board), white oak. As luck would have it, when i took a sample piece (there were left over pieces of it stored away) to match to my local flooring store, this size width isn't made any longer by Shaw (nor seems to be a size anyone carries--argg!) The flooring salesman seemed to think that as long as i could match the color of the wood well, the transition from 3 1/2" to 3 1/4" wouldn't be too noticeable. I wondered if any of you had ever had to deal with this issue and how you handled it. What do you think of having two rooms with slightly different wood width's. thank you!!
