How to handle odd transition

Hi everyone. A previous owner had put an addition on the home I'm in. There's an opening where the back sliding patio door once stood, with am 8" step down into the addition. The job wasn't done well, and what you see in the attached picture is metal plating at the transition. Under the metal is hardwood flooring in not to great shape, and a cutout from an old HVAC vent. Has anyone ever seen this before? I want to get rid of the metal plating.I was thinking of treating it like a stair, and having matching carpet laid over the metal and down into the addition. It may look odd because carpet usually doesn't go up and over the top stair. Any ideas/advice?
